November 2020 Wrap Up

In November I read four books which is lower than some months for me but with the holidays and how this year has been any reading is good.

Books:

The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia is a young adult nonfiction book that tells the history of the Romanov family during World War I and the Russian Revolution. It adds information about peasant lives and historical accounts from those not connect to the crown which many accounts of the Romanov Family don’t include. If you like Russian history its a very fast and easy read but not its not written with the younger side of the YA audience in mind.

So You Want To Work in a Museum? by Tara Young is a nonfiction book about working in museums and how to get a job in the field. My degree is in Public History and I’ve had jobs in museums but due to the pandemic my job search has stalled out. So, I’ve started to read more museum focused books for continuing my education and hoping that I the new year that I can restart my job search. This book would be good for anyone interested in a museum job. I already knew most of this information but I can always use a refresh on certain topics.

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher is a very creepy adult horror/fantasy novel. When Mouse agrees to clean out her grandmothers house she ends up finding her Step-grandfathers journal which is full of bizarre and creepy writing. However, when she ends up finding this place full of carved stones behind the house she realizes that the writings she found might be true. This is a very creepy and atmospheric book that kept me wanting to find out what would happen next. I loved the characters and the humor they bring to such an unsettling plot and I loved the ending.

The last book I read was From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back which is a series of Star Wars short stories set during The Empire Strikes Back but told from the perspective of background and side characters. Most of the stories I liked. However, I feel like there was too much focus on Hoth and Cloud City. There was also more focus on characters that show up in other Star Wars media that I’m not familiar with which in turn caused me to not know what was going on in some stories. Great for fans of Star Wars and those who like to see different takes on beloved stories and franchises. I received an advanced copy through NetGalley in exchange for a review.

October 2020 Wrap Up

This month I read 7 books. I love October and Halloween but I don’t always read horror books during this time as I’m a mood reader. So what I want to read doesn’t always fit the time of year. I’ve also been watching some movies this month.

Books:

The Sweetest Kind of Poison by Katie Wismer is a poetry collection about relationships and letting go. I’m not a huge fan of poetry but I follow the author and wanted to read this collection when it went on sale. Its well written and got me emotional. I do plan to read other poetry collections form this author in the future.

Laughter at the Academy by Seanan McGuire is a collection of McGuire’s short fiction throughout her career. I love her work and this is no exception. Great for fans or for those wanting to get a taste of all the different worlds Seanan McGuire has created.

Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View is an anthology celebrating the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope. This anthology contain 40 different stories by different authors retelling moments from the film but from the perspective of the background characters. I listened to the audio book which is wonderfully done with sound effects and really pulls you into the world of Star Wars. Most of the stories are good but there was too much focus on the Cantina scene. But I would recommend this to any fan of Star Wars.

Death Masks by Jim Butcher is the fifth book is the Dresden Files. This one follows Harry Dresden while he tries to find the stolen Shroud of Turin, fight demons, and win a duel against a vampire. Each book in this series get better and I plan to continue the series at this point. I have a full review for each book I’ve read of the series so far.

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse is the first book in a new adult fantasy series inspired by pre-Columbian Americas. We follow multiple characters as their paths cross in the city of Tova during the winter solstice. Weaving a tale of prophecies, politics, and forbidden magic these Roanhorse creates and intriguing world and I just want more. I have posted a full review of this book.

Romanov by Nadine Brandes is a young adult historical fantasy about the Romanov royal family near the end of their lives. Primarily, focuses on Anastasia and her brother as they end up escaping the murder of their family and how their lives could have been if magic existed. Well written and good for those fans of the Anastasia movie and the Romanov family history.

Walking Dead Book 8 by Robert Kirkman is a collection of the Walking Dead comic containing issues 85-96. I’ve been rereading the Walking Dead comics to catch up now that the series is over. However, I’m not enjoying them as much as I remember. I own through book 12 so I plan to read those but I haven’t decided it I will finish off the series.

Movies:

The Nun is a horror movie and one of the movies in the Conjuring universe. Set in 1952, after a nun in Romania commits’ suicide a Priest and a nun in training are sent to investigate. The story focuses on finding out information about the demon Valak, who masquerades as a nun, and first showed up in the Conjuring 2. I love horror movies and I like the Conjuring movies as well I just haven’t seen all of them yet. A good movie for this time of year.

The Meg is an action movie where a group of scientists go down to the Mariana Trench and encounter the Megalodon shark. When the shark escapes into open waters the scientist attempt to track it down and kill it. This is one of those popcorn movies that you don’t have to think about but its well acted and has much better production than the campy Syfy channel movies.

Book Review: Death Masks by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files #5)

Death Masks is the fifth book in the Dresden Files an urban fantasy series following Harry Dresden a wizard working in Chicago who helps those that get involved in the supernatural. Death Masks sees Harry being contacted by a vampire of the Red Court for a duel to end the war between wizards and vampires while also being contacted by a priest to find the stolen Shroud of Turin.

At this point in my reviews of this series I feel like I have to talk about major plot points was which will include spoilers so if you don’t want spoilers just know that I like the Dresden Files books and each one is better than the last.

This story has multiple plots but all of them connect and have consequences for the future of the series I feel. At the beginning of the book Dresden is contacted by a vampire for a duel which could end the war at the same time the Shroud of Turin has been stolen and Harry agrees to find it. While all of this is going on the police have found a body missing its head and hands but contains some of the worst diseases know to man.

The Shroud is the main plot with the duel working as extra conflict for the story. The Knights of the Cross are attempting to find the Shroud while fighting different groups of daemons who also want it. But they also don’t want Dresden involved at all.

Harry ends up wining the duel but the vampires attempt to kill him anyways say they were just trying to make things work more in their favor. The main plot comes to a head when Harry realizes that the priest that contacted him to find the Shroud is really a demon that has taken on the priest form and the plan is to use the Shroud to spread multiple diseases across the would using modern transportation. They end up getting the Shroud back but the demons disappear. Though one shows up at the very end to hint that they will be back and are watching Harry.

Personally, I like the Dresden Files but I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the series. I read these as audio book and James Marsters is an amazing narrator. However, I often find myself bored for about the first third to half of the book in the set of each books plot and then loving it when everything stars to come together. I do plan to continue with the series and I hope they will just get better from here.

September 2020 Wrap Up

September was a fairly good reading month for me having read nine books. My physical To Be Read pile is pretty big and is always changing but I have started to work my way through the eBooks that I have as well.

Books:

Final Girls by Mira Grant is a horror novella about a therapy treatment where dreams are created and shared to deal with past trauma. When the technology get hijacked while a reported and the creator of the technology they must try to survive together. I love Mira Grant’s work and this was no exception. Though I do wish this was a longer novel what we are given is just the right amount and a great horror story.

The Last Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff is a short story set in the Lotus Wars series. This short story is a prequel to the rest of the series and gives some of the back story to the world that is introduced in the first novel. While I liked this story I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it around the same time as the other books in the series. There has just been too much time between each book for me to really connect to the series or story at the moment.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is an adult historical fiction novel following the life of Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo and her relationships with her seven husbands. I really liked this book as Evelyn changed as a person and found her own way through the world. The twist near the end surprised me but I loved the characters and it speaks to the fact that you should live your life the way you want to as you never know what could happen.

The Hallow Places by T. Kingfisher is a horror novel about a young woman who finds a path to a world full of willow trees that might connect to other worlds from a hole in the wall of her grandfathers museum. However, there is something in the trees of this world that will find and hurt you it you think about them. Very creepy and unsettling but perfect for the Halloween season. I have a full review for this book as well.

Five Nights at Freddy’s Fazbear Frights vols. 3, 4, and 5 by Scott Cawthon are the next three volumes in the FNAF’s short story collections. Several years ago I got pulled into the lore of the video games and then the books so while they are not the best I still read them when new books come out. Each volume contains three short stories that connect different characters to the animatronics and other creations of Fazebear Entertainment. Great for those already interested in the series thought some stories are much more gruesome and confusing than others they are all creepy horror stories aimed at young adults.

Praying for Rain by Jay Kristoff is the last short story connected to the Louts Wars series that I needed to read. Very short story focusing on a Miho, a girl living in Kigen, and the boy she starts to fall in love with. However, when he finds out her secret her life is put in danger. This story adds a little more to the world and the people that are affected by the war. But once again if I had read this when I read the rest of the series I would have liked it more.

Labyrinth Coronation vol.1 is a graphic novel that tells the story about how Jareth become the Goblin King that we see in the movie. The story parallels Sarah’s journey in the movie with Jareth being wished away and his mother trying to get him back. Very good art and I plan to continue on with the series.

August 2020 Wrap Up

In August I didn’t read as much as I would have liked, only reading two books but both were five star reads. However, I did watch several movies which I will be reviewing in this Wrap Up.

Books:

Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant is a horror novella that I have reread multiple times and have a full review for. The only thing I will say about it is it follows a group of scientists that are searching for mermaids and find them. I love this story and expect that I will reread it and the sequel novel again and again.

The other book I read this month was Gideon The Ninth by Tasyn Muir. This is a science fiction/fantasy novel about lesbian necromancers in space. Though it is so much more than that and its very hard to describe. I would recommend checking out my full review of the book. Its a new favorite and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Movies:

Crawl is a disaster movie where a young woman goes to check on her dad who’s house in Florida is in the path of a Category 5 Hurricane. While finding her dad, Alligators are in their basement trying to catch them and they must work together to make it out alive. I watched this one day when I didn’t want to think about what I was watching. The movie is good but like many disaster movies it focuses more on the spectacle than on a story or plot.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged is a survival horror movie that is technically the sequel to 47 Meters Down but none of the characters of the first movie appear in the sequel. The story follows a group of teenagers who decide to go underwater cave diving in a newly discovered Mayan ruins however when the girls get spooked and cause a cave in they must attempt to survive shark attacks by sharks that have learned to survive in complete darkness. A kind of campy shark movie that is great for those times that you don’t want to have to focus on the plot to understand what is going on.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is the direct sequel to the 1995 Jumanji movie staring Robin Williams. Instead of being sucked into a board game and having to win to make everything go back to normal a group of teenagers during detention find an old video game that they get sucked into which they must survive and beat to return home. I love the original Jumanji movie and it was a childhood favorite. This new movie while very different is also very good. I love the actors and the part where the teenagers are inhabiting the bodies of the video game characters. I would give the movie a watch if you haven’t seen it yet.

Book Review: Gideon The Ninth (The Locked Tomb #1) by Tamsyn Muir

42036538Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir is an Adult Scifi/Fantasy novel. The story is very hard to explain but its amazing. What I heard about the book was that it was lesbian necromancers in space and that was all I needed to know to pick it up but its much more than that.

The world is set up where there are nine houses on nine different planets with each house focusing on aspect/power of necromancy. The Emperor has invited each houses main necromancer and their swordsman to join in a competition to become an elite member of the Emperors court. The story starts out with Gideon who is an orphan raised in the Ninth House attempting to leave and join the army. However, when Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House kicks her ass Gideon must help Harrow win or the Ninth House will die.

The story drops you straight in and you pick up what really going on as you read. For me there was a lot of things that I didn’t get or understand initially but the relationship between Gideon and Harrow keeps the story flowing and convinces you to read on.Though I feel like this is one of those books that you will understand more with each reading.

I love the banter between them as a times they just seem to hate each other but you know there is more to it. The ending was shocking and amazing and felt like my heart was being ripped out. This is one of my new favorite books and I can’t wait to read the sequel.

June 2020 Wrap Up

This month I read seven books including one audio book and one graphic novel. I’ve also watched several movies.

Books:

52831943The Anti-Virginity Pact by Katie Wismer is a new self published young adult contemporary. The book follows Mare and her best friend who have signed a pact agreeing that they won’t be virgins by the end of their senior year of high school. This is a hard hitting contemporary that deals with topics such as family and religion. I have a full review up as well.

45010800Witchy by Ariel Slamet Ries is set in a world where length of ones hair determines your power as a witch but having too long of hair will get you killed. Nyneve has hidden her true hair length but when the Witch guard conscription comes around she decides that she will determine her own future. A short graphic novel that is the start of a new fantasy series. Great for young adult fan of graphic novels and comics.

ByFireAbove_hc.inddMiddlegame by Seanan McGuire is an adult fantasy novel about alchemy, language, math, and family. The story follows Roger and Dodger who were created by Reed to embody the Doctrine of Ethos which would allow someone to control how the world works. Adopted by different families Roger is all languages and works while Dodger is math and logic. When they connect as children talking to each other in their minds they know something is different about them and that it could be dangerous. I have a full review of this book but it is very hard to explain but is absolutely amazing and one of my new favorite books.

44660931._SY475_Five Nights at Freddy’s Fazbear Frights #2: Fetch by Scott Cawthon is the second collection of three short stories in the FNAF universe. The stories in this collection are Fetch, Lonely Freddy, and Out of Stock. Fetch follows a group of kids that find a animatronic dog inside an old Freddy’s Fazbear pizzeria that starts terrorizing them. Lonely Freddy is a creep story about a older brother who wants everyone to know how fake is younger sister is but things go bad at her birthday party at Freddy’s. The last story Out of Stock follows several kids that get their hand on a Plushtrap toy that seems to have very human eyes and teeth which then attacks them at night. Though I like how creepy these story collections can be I don’t like the fact that kids in the stories get hurt or punished for not knowing any better.

27213244The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers is the first book in the Wayfarers series a series of slice of life adult science fiction novels. The story follows the crew of a tunneling ship the Wayfarer as they take on jobs creating tunnels between different planets. The is a character driven story that the plot takes second place to but I loved all the characters and their relationships. I have a full review for this book and I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

15843166You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero is a self-help book about how everyone is a badass in their own way and how to stop messing around and get your life track. The author believes that if you set your mind on changing something you can do it if you are willing to put in the work. I listened to this and its a very short audio book which is what I wanted at the time. It has advice on many different topics but focuses on how mindset is everything. Good for someone looking to this kind of information and to be encouraged to do and change whatever to be a better, happier person.

41430922._SY475_The Hunger by Alma Katsu is a historical fiction novel with a bit of a supernatural twist. Follows the Donnor party and their attempt to travel to California. I like the ideas and concepts of the book but it jumps between too many characters. Because I this I didn’t really connect to the story or the characters which meant that I didn’t care what happen to them.

Movies:

MV5BYmIzNjUxZGQtYjg0OS00MmE0LTgwZDAtMzVmODQ2MGI5MTQ5XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTA3MTA4Mzgw._V1_I watched three movies this month which I haven’t done in a while. The first movie I watched was Rocketman which is the musical about the life of Elton John. I didn’t know really anything about Elton John before watching the movie but I movie kept me interested. I think it would also make an amazing stage musical.

p16981625_v_v8_aeKnives Out is a murder mystery movie following death of crime novelist Harlan Thrombey the night of his 85th birthday. This is a murder mystery in the similar vein as Clue but not as comedic. I loved the ensemble cast and all the weird family drama that changed how I thought each character was involved. If you haven’t seen it yet I would highly recommend it.

EDEsh0gU4AUTO3PThe last movie I watched this month was Joker. This movie follows the origins of the DC and Batman villain The Joker. This is a very good movie that shows one mans decent into madness and how a person could become a villain like the Joker. I plan to have a full review out shortly but I would recommend seeing this movie if you haven’t already.

Book Review: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet(Wayfarers #1) by Becky Chambers

27213244The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chamber is the first book of the adult science fiction Wayfarers series. The story follows the crew of the tunneling ship Wayfarer as they take on a new crew member Rosemary Harper and the new jobs tunneling jobs that become available.

Tunneling ships create wormholes in space to connect different planet and locations. The crew of the Wayfarer is a culmination of different people and aliens that have become family to each other. The stories plot is that the Wayfarer as been given the job of creating a tunnel to a distant planet held by a race that just agreed to join the rest of the galactic society. However, the plot is not the main focus of the story the characters are.

Don’t read this if you’re wanting something where the plot is the focus. The characters are the important part of this story. The story is told through vignettes from the perspective of the different characters and crew members. They are a found family that might be different species but they love each other.

I absolutely loved this book. Though I love all different types of book some that focus more on the story than character and visa versa. However, this books strength lies in how well realized all these different characters are and their relationships to the rest of the crew. Everyone has their own history, story and some even secrets but they all are part of this big family that will do what ever they have to to keep each other together.

Book Review: Middlegame by Seanan McGuire

ByFireAbove_hc.inddMiddlegame by Seanan McGuire is an adult fantasy novel about alchemy, language, math, and family. The story follows Roger and Dodger who were created by Reed to embody the Doctrine of Ethos which would allow someone to control how the world works. Adopted by different families Roger is all languages and works while Dodger is math and logic. When they connect as children talking to each other in their minds they know something is different about them and that it could be dangerous.

The story takes the reader brought different points of Roger and Dodgers life as they try to figure out why and how they are connected and how they can change plans made for them.

If you are interested in reading Middlegame I would recommend being familiar the fantasy genre as this does turn some fantasy tropes on its head. Also their is some dark material in this book primarily related to attempted suicide and the aftermath.

Middlegame is not an easy book or story to explain but it’s beautifully written and one of Seanan McGuire’s bests works. It’s one of my favorite book that I’ve read this year and I read it at the exact right time.

Book Review: Summer Knight by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files #4)

91478Summer Knight by Jim Butcher is the fourth book in the Dresden Files series. This book follows Dresden as he deals with the consequences of starting a war against the vampire courts. The main plot focuses more on the Fae Courts and his deal with Leananshidhe who sold it to Mab, the Winter Queen. Dresden must now work for Mab and attempt to find out who killed the Summer Knight.

This book gives more information of how the different Fae and other creatures work in this world. As well as finally showing us the White Council of Wizards. We get some more of Harry’s back story and how he became a member of the White Council. I really liked the new characters introduced especially Ebeneezer McCoy and Elaine as they give more information on Dresden’s past.

The main conflict of the story is that Dresden needs to find out who killed the Summer Knight before war can break out between the Fae Court while also proving himself to the White Council which if he doesn’t they will let the Vampire Courts kill him.

Every book of the Dresden Files keeps getting better and better. When I first started the series I didn’t know if I would continue with it but the world and stories which are better in each book keep bring me back.
