Book Review: Queen Demon (The Rising World #2) by Martha Wells

Queen Demon by Martha Wells is the second book in the Rising World series. We follow Witch King Kai and his companions in the aftermath of the first book Witch King.

Once again the story is split between the past and present. In the past we follow Kai as he is fighting against the Hierarch’s and the growing relationships between the companions. While in the present the story focuses on the aftermath of Kai disappearing and the current politics. The main focus of Queen Demon is on Dahin who believes that he knows the location of the Hierarch’s well of power but he is hiding information from Kai. If the Well has been found then a new Hierarch could rise and they might not be able to stop them.

While I loved this continuation I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first book. I feel like this book is providing a lot of information and more focused on the politics that will be important later in the series but much of the action is at the end. I also think I would enjoy this series more if the past events were told to us all at once followed by the present day story.

A third book has not yet been announced (at this time) because of how this book ends I would bet that we are getting a third book.

Book Review: All Systems Red and Artifical Condition by Martha Wells (The Murderbot Diaries #1&2)

All Systems Red By Martha Wells is the first book in the Murderbot Diaries and a reread for me. I love Murderbot and how they truly just want to be left alone to watch shows but also feels like they have to do their job. We follow Murderbot a company supplied Sec Unit who has hacked his own governor module so that he can do what he wants. Murderbot would really like to be left alone to watch shows and decide who he is but when a group of scientists end up murdered he and the group he is protecting need to figure out the truth.

Artifical Condition is the second book in the series. We follow Murderbot after they have left the group from book one to try to find out why and he was involved in a massacre at a mining facility before the start of the series. We see how they try to blend in and I loved the relationship with ART.

I definitely recommend the series and plan to continue reading it and also the Apple TV plus show.

Book Review: Witch King by Martha Wells

Witch King is an adult fantasy novel following Kai who after being murdered and trapped finds a lesser mage trying to gain control of his powers. Kai, along with his friend Ziede, must figure out why they were imprisoned though Kai might not like the answers.

The world created here is very different from other fantasies with a very unique magic system. The story goes back and forth between the present focusing on the mystery of what happened to Kai and his past and how he became know as the Witch King. Martha Wells does this so well that the reader learns what is going on in the present at the same time as the characters. The flash backs give enough information on the world and the past events to be informative while also leaving a mystery.

This is one of those books that is good on a first read but will be even better on a reread when you understand what is going on Witch King is currently a stand alone but is left open enough to have sequels in the future if the author wanted to.
